“the higher you climb…”
“…the better the view.”
And the greater the knowledge that comes with it.
I have been teaching a class called Business Math for the past three years - It’s a class geared towards upperclassman, and it is that class that we all wish we had.
Taxes
Loans
Debit
Credit
Buying Homes
Budgetting
It’s the best class in high school, and the kids love it - because of course they do. It’s more real than anything I can ever do with Geometry, Algebra, or Calculus, even with SCENIC Math.
My favorite thing about the class is how much I learn about the topics myself. I didn’t know how to file taxes 3 years ago, but now I do.
I’ve noticed, to no surprise, just how much better I have gotten at teaching taxes over the past years. The more knowledge I gain, the deeper level of understanding I reach, the more clearer my lessons become.
It’s just a silly, obvious thing in teaching, but we forget this all. the. time.
I have a student teacher this yer, and it’s been fun watching him teach things for the first time, stumbling over words, not explaining things clearly, but getting better with each repetition.
It’s so easy to just notice the negatives in our job, and complain and gripe and cry.
We do our best to notice all the positives in our kids, in their growth and learning.
We need to do better at recognizing our own growth and learning too.
A summit isn’t amazing, until you look back at where you came from.
